We are aware that navigating a college environment can be challenging—not only for our students but for families as well. Below we have listed some helpful tips for our Husky Families.
- Review the First-Year Planning Guide to become more familiar with helpful resources for your student to utilize in the first year of college along with learning more about beneficial timelining for your student’s academic success at the University.
- If your student will be living on campus, review how applying for Housing and Dining accounts will work for your student so you are well equipped to support them with this process.
- Remind your students to make copies of all important paperwork and to make sure to write down the name, department, date and feedback of the person they are speaking to when they contact different units on campus with questions.
- Keep in mind that interests and opportunities are likely to change as your student finds their academic stride. This may mean that the outcome of their college career is not the same as their initial goal.
- Be mindful that your student may not have the same amount of time to devote to family responsibilities as they did before since their new academic experiences are much different than their high school or community college.
- Have patience with yourselves and one another—this is a new experience for everyone in your family so you will all be learning about this transition process together!
